Fearlessness

Fearlessness

In these times of untold stress and tension caused by the pandemic, fear is a natural emotion which preys on the minds of a lot of people all over the world. This fear is fanned by a lot of negative news which is spread by the media, some true, some motivated by ulterior motives; but this ultimately preys on the minds of the common man.

What is fear? Isn’t it just a thought created in the mind through information gathered from other people and the media and then isn’t that painful fear felt in the heart? It is this thought which keeps whirling in the mind generating questions like what if this and what if that happens! Then with this negative emotion and the energy it creates pervading the earth how can we conquer this fear – how do we become fearless? If ever you feel overcome by dread of some illness or accident, you should inhale and exhale deeply, slowly, and rhythmically several times, relaxing with each exhalation. This helps the circulation to become normal. If your heart is truly quiet you cannot feel fear at all.

Fearlessness is a quality of the soul which can be brought to the fore and enhanced through certain yogic and meditative practices. “Fearlessness is the impregnable rock on which the house of spiritual life must be erected. Fearlessness means faith in God: faith in His protection, His justice, His wisdom, His mercy, His love, His omnipresence,” said Paramhansa Yogananda. If we accept this simple advice, we can definitely conquer our fear. With this basic concept as the foundation, we must begin meditation and turn inwards – experience the inner silence and joy – here the mind is quiet – no waves, just like the calm, serene water of a beautiful lake.

Do you feel that the current situation has made you powerless and helpless? Banish such thoughts! You have the power but you are afraid to use it or you do not know how to use it. There is nothing more powerful than the mind – just learn to use it to your advantage – give it a positive direction and you will conquer your fear. Do not ever let fear take control of your mind and will – if you feel fear, look at it directly, try and analyse the root cause and take steps to embolden the mind to overpower that fearful thought. Constantly cultivate the soul’s immortal power by meditation and God-contact, and use that power in all difficulties.
