Throughout our lives we carry so many faces, so many
masks – son, brother, sister, father, mother, husband, friend, employee and so
on – we are acting in so many roles that we completely forget who we are when
we are acting in a particular role at that point in time. With all the roles we
play we play our real face is hidden from us deep within. We never encounter
that true face because we are living in a world of illusion, a stage – on which
we put on as many acts as we need to depending on the role which we are
playing.
Discovering your true face is the ultimate that has to
be attained, this is the ultimate that man is capable of attaining, but it is
also something he is entirely capable of missing completely. “Nowhere, not in
the sky, nor in the midst of the sea, nor deep in the mountains, can you hide
from your own mischief,” is a quote from the Buddhist scriptures which tells us
that we cannot hide anywhere from our own mischief. We can never fool ourselves,
or sugar coat our deeds that there will be some way out of the jam. Bathing in
the Ganges is not going to wash away your sins – you will only be deceiving
yourself if you think in this manner. No rituals, no pilgrimages will help –
your deeds will follow you like your own shadow, it will torture you wherever
you go. It is better not to do it – but you can definitely avoid doing it if
you become conscious, else you will be bound to do it.
So, wherever or whatever you are trying to hide you
can never hide it from yourself. For you to get over this game of hide and seek,
for you to discover your true hidden face you need to go deep into meditation
and find out who you really are – there you will see your true face, who you
really are – there you will be in unity – no duality.
Once we stop hiding, we find happiness and happiness
is the very function of unity. It is the music which takes place when one is in
unison, everything fits together like a giant jigsaw puzzle – when the true face
appears there is harmony, no conflict, not even a trace of it – you have now
become an orchestra.
Once you have discovered your true self, you stop
hiding, you begin living in the moment itself. Such a person does not live
through the past, he does not have any ideas to live – he simply lives, he just
responds to the present moment – the only reality!
