How Does a Spiritual Journey Begin?
A spiritual journey doesn’t begin with
fireworks or fanfare—it often starts quietly, in the stillness of a question.
It might be a moment of deep reflection, a personal crisis, or a subtle
yearning for something more meaningful. For many, it begins when the outer
world no longer satisfies the inner hunger for purpose, connection, or truth.
The beginning of a spiritual journey –
the calling can come in many forms – one starts feeling a sense of emptiness
despite material success, or a loss or heartbreak that shakes one’s foundation,
or a sudden realisation that life feels repetitive or hollow, or a curiosity
about the nature of existence or the divine within us.
This awakening nudges us to look inward.
It’s not about abandoning the world, but about seeing it through a new lens - one
that seeks depth, authenticity, and connection.
Once the call is heard, the journey
begins with introspection. As Swami Shivkrupanandji says - ask these questions to
yourself: Who am I? What is the purpose of my life? Where am I headed?
These questions lead to exploration. We
might begin reading spiritual texts, meditating, journaling, or spending more
time in nature. We may feel drawn to practices like yoga, mindfulness, or
prayer. The goal isn’t to find immediate answers, but to cultivate awareness
and openness. And if our inner quest is really powerful we will be drawn to our
living Master or Guru, like I was – to Swami Shivkrupanandji.
According to Swamiji, beginners often
benefit from decluttering their physical and mental space, reconnecting with
nature, and developing a self-care routine. These simple acts help create the
internal conditions for spiritual growth.
As we progress, we begin to notice
subtle shifts - we become more present and less reactive, we start valuing
inner peace over external validation, we feel more connected to others, nature,
and something greater than ourself.
This phase is often marked by shadow
work—facing our fears, wounds, and limiting beliefs. It’s not always
comfortable, but it’s essential for healing and transformation. The journey
involves moving from unconscious patterns to conscious living, where we begin
to understand the mysteries of life and our place within it.
A spiritual journey isn’t a
destination—it’s a lifelong unfolding. There’s no single path or right way to
begin. Some follow religious traditions, others carve their own route through
personal rituals and inner inquiry. What matters is the sincerity of our
intention and the courage to keep going, even when the path gets foggy. That is
where Gurus like Shivkrupanand Swami are the guiding lights which light up and
show the path.
Ultimately, the journey begins when we
choose to listen - to our soul, our intuition, and the quiet whispers of the
universe. It’s a sacred invitation to live with more depth, compassion, and
truth. And once we begin, we’ll never quite see the world the same way again.
That is what I have experienced and lived for the past 16 years. Life just
changed completely!
