Breaking Barriers of Rigidity

Rigidity is not simply stubbornness - it is a deeper condition of consciousness. When our chitta (inner awareness) is cluttered with past impressions, ego, and intellectual pride, it becomes like a dirty bowl. No matter how nourishing the porridge of divine grace may be, it cannot be received in a vessel coated with slime. This is the anatomy of rigidity: a mind unable to absorb truth because it clings to its own residue.

Intellectual Rigidity - Modern society glorifies intellect, but often in a one-sided way. We accumulate external knowledge, mistaking information for wisdom. Yet true realisation is not found in books or theories - it arises from inner experience. Intellectual rigidity blinds us to the living truth within. It is like polishing the outside of the bowl while ignoring the dirt inside. Without cleansing the chitta, knowledge remains superficial.

The Trap of External Religion - Religion, when reduced to rituals and labels, becomes another barrier. Rituals are like stairs, but the goal is the building itself. If we cling to the stairs, we never reach the destination. True spirituality is like becoming the ocean - vast, limitless, merging with the Divine. To remain only religious is to stay a river that has not yet merged with the sea. Rigidity keeps us stuck in the steps, never tasting the fullness of arrival.

The Master as the Mirror - To break rigidity, we need a living Guru. Just as a mirror reflects our face, the Satguru reflects our soul. Swami Shivkrupanandji teaches that the Guru is not merely a physical body but a medium of Universal Consciousness (Paramatma). Through surrender, we connect to Guru-energies that exist beyond time and form. The Guru helps us turn inward, breaking the habit of external focus. When we stop seeing only the physical, we begin to perceive the subtle body, expanding our consciousness.

Unconditional Surrender – The Mystery of Samarpan - In the word Samarpan lies the mystery of life. Rigidity is the ego of “I”—the desperate need to control outcomes and the fear of losing identity. Surrender dissolves this barrier. It is not defeat but alignment. Acceptance means realising that the Guru’s qualities - emptiness, void - exist within us. When we accept this connection, we stop reacting to the world and begin projecting peace into it.

Being with the Soul - Breaking rigidity is not about abandoning society or becoming ascetic. It is about dedicating time daily to being with the soul. This practice softens the rigid chitta, allowing grace to flow. True surrender also means detachment from doer-ship. When karma happens through you, rather than being claimed by you, the ego dissolves naturally. Life shifts from “I have done” to “It has happened.”

The Shift in Perspective - Rigidity dissolves when we move from religion to spirituality, from steps to destination. The goal is inner balance while living in the world. By surrendering ego, cleansing consciousness, and aligning with the Guru’s energies, barriers fall away. What remains is openness, fluidity, and peace. In this state, life is no longer bound by rigidity - it flows like the ocean, vast and free.
