Are You Ready for Spirituality?
I was having a discussion today
with a person who has been following a Guru for the past twenty years and has
now kind of lost her way. During the conversation I sensed a lot of angst for the way things have gone in her life and a lot of the blame apparently lies with
the Guru.
The question here is when you
took the initiation you were not a child and you went into spirituality with eyes
open. When we attend Swamiji’s video shibir or any shibir for that matter for
the first time, Swamiji tells us during those eight days that the seed of spirituality
has been planted in you, now it is up to you to nurture that seed in first the
next 45 days, and then continue for six months by meditating regularly and see
if it benefits you. If during the first 45 days, you are not sure whether you
should continue or not, go on doing it for the next four and a half months and
find out for yourself whether this path is conducive to your spiritual goal.
No one is being forced to do
anything, it is your soul that is guiding you; if at any point you feel this is
not for you, you are free to give it up. So, what I mean to say is the test of
compatibility with anything to do is something you need to take yourself. If
you are okay with it, great, if not then too, great! But after a couple of
decades on this path, if you feel that you have been misled, then it is very
sad – my personal opinion is you cannot blame anyone but yourself for your life’s
situation.
Guru’s and spiritual Master’s say
a lot of things in their discourses, how you interpret what they are saying is
up to you and the state you are in. Your interpretation is yours only, you
cannot blame someone else for it, least of all the Master!
So, if you are not sure whether
you want liberation in this birth or not, if you feel that you want to do a lot
of things in life before you turn to spirituality, which is a journey into
nothingness, then enjoy life and first ‘do’ whatever you need to ‘do’. If you
wish, do meditate also knowing full well that the deposits which you are making
in the bank of spirituality will be withdrawn in the next birth. Do all this
with full consciousness.
No one is to blame for what is
happening in their life – the only person responsible is that person himself or
herself! Spirituality is all about knowing your ‘self’, and in getting to know
your ‘self’ you have to go deep within yourself to know who ‘you’ are. In that
process a lot of cleansing takes place and ultimately you reach a stage where
the unification happens, the ego disappears, the mind becomes quiet, and you
find a sense of peace which is indescribable. Unconditional love just starts
flowing from within you as you start living a life of awareness as a witness.
