Nothing to Fear

Nothing to Fear

Many of us have woken up in the middle of the night completely disoriented and not knowing where we are or who we are, except that our heart is pounding and we are very frightened! When we go to sleep it is the conscious mind that switches off, our subconscious mind is wide awake. Dreams occur when the conscious mind goes to sleep and the subconscious mind is functioning. If the subconscious mind also goes to sleep, researchers call it deep sleep – you are truly dead to the world and in a most relaxed state.

Fear that is deep within surfaces from the subconscious mind when the conscious mind has gone to sleep. After you suddenly wake up in such a state and try to analyse this fear, it is like probing into a garbage can before throwing out the garbage!  Instead of trying to analyse the fear trying to figure out what caused it, a better approach is to replace that fear with something positive. You could tell yourself, “Whatever it is, it’s something that happened before. I’m not going to worry about it. It’s not going to affect me anymore. I am bold, I am strong. I am consciously doing the right things. I am practicing Yoga. I am doing a lot of prayer and meditation. I trust in God. I love everybody. I don’t need to be afraid of anyone in this world because all people are my brothers and sisters. Everyone is my own Self.” Hammer these positive thoughts into your subconscious mind through repetition in the conscious mind.

We have all been living out of fear, our religions are based on fear – we are taught fear almost since the day we are born – do this - do that, don’t do this – don’t do that, if you do this, that will happen and so on – so our fear is used against us. Rumi’s statement is revolutionary, “Do not move because of fear”. All the religions say, ‘Fear God’….

Don’t follow your fear instinct, because that is going to make you a coward. It is a humiliation imposed by yourself. Whenever you see some fear, go against it! A simple criterion: whenever you see there is fear, go against it and you will be always moving, growing, expanding, coming closer to the moment when the ego simply drops – because its whole functioning is through fear. And the absence of the ego is the journey to self-realisation, enlightenment.

Just a simple principle: remember, anything that makes you afraid, fearful, is a clear indication of what you have to do. You have to do just the opposite. You are not to become a follower of fear, you have to fight your fear. You have to fight that thought, you have to ignore it, squeeze it out of your system, starve it of oxygen. The moment you decide to fight your fear thus, you are on the way towards enlightenment.
