Someone Inside Loves Us

Many people I know have expressed that they do not feel loved and fear depression from the perceived lack of love. When people say this, then the question I ask them is. “Firstly, do you love yourself? Because if you do not love yourself, how do you expect others to love you?” Love is a pure energy which flowers within, our very nature is love, hence not feeling love or being unable to love is a bit difficult to digest.

All of us love our family, friends, relatives, pets and so on. Most of love from a sense of ownership – my husband/wife, my son/daughter, my father/mother, my friend and so on. Here the ‘my’ becomes more important than the ‘love’ as our ego comes into the picture. Swamiji always talks of selfless love – this kind of love is free from ego; it is with no strings attached.

Love should actually be like breathing. It should be one of your qualities – wherever you are, with whomsoever you are, or even if you are alone – love should continuously overflow from within you. It is not a question of being in love with someone or something – it is just a question of being love.

People fall in love, feel frustrated in their love – this love is selfish as it arises from desire, lust even – they narrow down their love to such an extent that the ocean of love just cannot remain there. There is no way you can contain the ocean – it is not a small stream; love is your whole being, your whole existence – love is actually your godliness. The question of the object of love does not arise at all. You love your wife, your children, your servants, your friends, your garden and with the ocean, you love the ocean too. This is because you yourself are love.

When you look within during meditation, in due course of time, you will find what you are looking for – the self. You stop looking at objects of love, you start looking within. The picture starts becoming clear, you see the light, your ‘I’ sense dissolves and you merge with the one within. You are now one, and you ‘see’ the one who loves you, the Divine Presence. If we feel the Divine Presence within us, there is no need for anyone else to comfort us, is there?

The best comforter lies within us. All other comforts, all other love is temporary and dies with the physical existence of the person or thing, leaving a sense of loss. Such comforts, such love is temporary and when the times comes it just goes away. Don’t depend on external love which will make you happy only temporarily, when the permanent and perpetual love lies within. That is the way it should be, so that one day you realise that there’s always someone within us to comfort us, love us.
