The Self and Ego are not the Same

The Mask vs. The Face - The ego is a social construct - a collection of labels, past experiences, achievements, and conditioning. It is the identity you build to navigate the external world. The ego is like a mask you wear, while the Self is the face behind it. The ego is who you think you are; the Self is who you truly are when all thoughts fall away.

The Ego is Not You - The ego thrives on comparison, separation, and validation. It constantly seeks defence, recognition, and control. Because it is artificial, it feels fragile and insecure. The ego is reactive, always trying to accumulate or protect. The Self, however, is inherently complete, still, and connected to the whole of existence. The ego is the opposite of your real Self. The Self does not need validation; it simply is.

Distinguishing the Self from the Ego - Cultivating mindfulness is the key to distinguishing the Self from the ego. When you feel defensiveness, pride, or insecurity arise, pause and observe. The moment you witness the ego’s reaction, you step back into the Self. The observer is the Self; the reaction is the ego.

The ego takes itself and its problems very seriously. The Self, however, sees life with lightness and playfulness. When you can laugh at the mind’s endless craving for control, the grip of the ego dissolves, revealing spacious inner peace.

The Ego and Possession - The ego defines itself by what it owns - material things, relationships, titles, and opinions. It clings to possessions and outcomes as proof of identity. But the Self is beyond ownership. By letting go of the psychological need to possess or control, you break the illusion of the ego. You realise your true nature doesn’t need external validation to exist.

Dropping the Burden of the Ego - The ego is heavy. It thrives on separation and control, creating stress and conflict. Dropping the burden of the ego is like removing a mask you’ve worn for too long. Suddenly, you feel light, carefree, and free. Nothing seems to matter anymore because you are no longer bound by the ego’s illusions. You simply enjoy being with the Self, immersed in bliss and love for all.

Meditation and Surrender - Meditation under the guidance of a Himalayan Master like Shree Shivkrupanand Swamiji helps us surrender to the Self. In meditation, the ego dissolves naturally. The mind’s chatter quiets, and the Self shines forth. Once the ego is gone, you merge with your true Self. This merging brings a profound sense of freedom, lightness, and joy. You no longer seek meaning outside; you rest in the completeness within.

Returning to the Self - The Self and ego are not the same. The ego is a mask, a shadow, a construct. The Self is the reality, the face behind the mask. By cultivating mindfulness, dropping possession, and surrendering through meditation, you dissolve the ego and return to the Self. In that state, life becomes effortless, playful, and filled with love. The Self is not something to be achieved - it is who you already are.

Jai Baba Swami!
