Humility and
Meditation
On the spiritual path we all have to tackle our egotism, as egotism
is nothing but a ravenous hunger restricted in a small space – self-concerned,
competitive and distinction-hungry. On the other hand, humility is freedom from
the need to prove one is superior all the time – being humble is very
important! By being humble one is infused with lovely emotions like admiration,
companionship and gratitude. Being grateful and thankful, expressing one’s
gratitude ensures that pride does not grow easily.
With humility comes the awareness that there’s a lot that one does
not know and a lot of what we think we know is distorted or plain wrong! Today,
many of us see our lives as a journey, in fact spirituality is said to be the
journey into the unknown – a discovery of the self. On the contrary, in the
material world the journey of life is considered to be like a climb up the
ladder of success, where we think we are making a difference or leading a
purposeful life. We often think of achieving something concrete – performing some
service that will have an impact on the world, creating a successful company,
or doing something for the company.
Truly humble people use the same journey metaphor to describe their
own lives, but this has to do with one’s internal life. This is more about
self-confrontation; it is more about introspection and looking for the flaws
within our own persona and taking steps to rectify them. After identifying the weaknesses
withing ourselves, if we habitually fall for those temptations and do not fight
against these weaknesses, we gradually destroy some core piece within ourselves.
If this happens, we will not be as good, internally, as we want to be – we will
then fail in some profound way.
To stop this from happening meditation plays a huge role. A living
Master guides us and teaches us to look within. The Master is like a mirror and
he helps us see exactly who we are – we begin to identify our flaws, and with
meditation and cleansing of the chakras we automatically start following the straight
and narrow path. Our energy field is purified and the negative energies stay
away and we begin to live in awareness of our flaws – with this we correct our
selves before we do something which goes against our core values.
Gradually, with deeper and deeper depths in meditation we begin to
live a life of purity and all the negative emotions stay away, we become humble,
living a life of humility filled with love and compassion – our core nature
comes to the fore and life goes on normally, the only difference is that we now
live in the present with love and compassion!
