Go the Whole Hog
As in everything in life, we cannot and must not
do anything in a half-hearted manner. If any of us want to experience the ‘truth’
that everything is happening as per universal consciousness or Divine Will,
then whatever happens we need to accept that in totality.
Suppose we overeat, or over-drink or do anything
in excess, which is out of the ordinary, then that too we will have to accept
that this is as per Divine Will! If we fall sick, or suffer a fall, get into an
accident – that too is Divine Will!
Whenever we do something, we do it because a
thought comes into our mind, we think about it and then put it into action – we
have no clues where the thought came from, as we don’t live with awareness, we
are not even sure if the thought is our own – and if things go wrong, then there
is absolutely no need to feel bad or guilty about it – it was Divine Will. As
it is we take birth to endure our karma, and keep creating new karma in this
birth, till the time we meet our own Living Master who plants the seed of
self-realisation within us. After that profound event our karmas of this birth
till the point of self-realisation are absorbed by the Master and we have got
to just endure/enjoy past birth karmas with equanimity and balance.
Sometimes when things go wrong, we sense that it
is not our fault and we try to look for excuses – that is nothing but our ego popping
up to show its power. Whatever we do, guilt and remorse are not avenues we
should take – if we have really hurt someone, then forgiveness is the path to
take. Just seek forgiveness humbly and leave the bitterness behind. On the
spiritual path seeking forgiveness and forgiving become an ongoing process.
None of this can be done half-way, one has to go the whole hog.
Either everything is happening as per Divine Will
or as per our will, viz. ego! If we totally trust the Divine Will, it will not
bring conflict. Even if our ego prompts us to do something wrong, God will say,
“He/She is completely trusting Me. His/Her ego is prompting this, but he/she is
doing it in My name. I should stop it.” God will take care of our ego for us.
It is easy to talk about, but very
hard to practice. Until we achieve that highest complete and unconditional surrender,
we can think, “Whatever mistake we make is because of our weakness. It’s our
ego that makes us do these things.” If everything is nice, “Ah. God must have
prompted me to do this. That is why it has come out well.” That way we are always
safe.
