The Journey to Being Human

The Journey to Being Human

Osho once said that man is a bridge between the animal and the divine. This simple yet profound statement captures the essence of our human journey. We are aware of both aspects of our nature - the instinctual and the transcendent - and it is this awareness that makes us human. Yet, it is also what makes us restless, conflicted, and often torn between extremes: selfishness and generosity, love and hate, frailty and strength, hope and despair.

The journey of being human is not about choosing one side of these contradictions but about embracing them all. To be human is to experience the full spectrum of life through self-awareness, emotions, and consciousness. It is to feel deeply, to create meaning, to show empathy, and to transcend basic survival instincts in order to realise our full potential.

Human beings are unique in their ability to feel with great depth. Joy, sorrow, love, anger, compassion - all these emotions enrich our lives and connect us to one another. Emotional depth allows us to form bonds, to care for others, and to experience life in its fullness. Without emotions, life would be mechanical; with them, it becomes a tapestry of experiences that shape our growth.

Unlike animals, we can reflect on our own existence. We can ask questions like “Who am I?” and “What is the purpose of life?” This self-awareness is both a gift and a challenge. It makes us conscious of our limitations but also opens the door to transformation. Through awareness, we can observe our thoughts, recognise our patterns, and choose how to respond rather than react.

Being human, means we are not bound by instinct alone. We have the power to transcend our conditioning, to rise above fear, anger, and desire. This capacity to go beyond survival is what makes us divine. It allows us to create art, pursue wisdom, and live with compassion. Transcendence is not about denying our humanity but about elevating it.

At the heart of being human is empathy - the ability to feel with others, to share their joys and sorrows. Empathy reminds us that we are not isolated beings but part of a larger whole. It is through empathy that we discover shared humanity, that we see ourselves in others, and that we cultivate compassion.

The journey of being human is not static. We are constantly evolving, learning, and growing. Each experience - whether joyful or painful - shapes us. Evolution means embracing change, adapting, and moving closer to our highest potential. It is a reminder that being human is not a destination but a continuous journey.

To be human is to live with both light and shadow. We carry within us kindness and cruelty, wisdom and ignorance, courage and fear. The challenge is not to eliminate the shadow but to balance it with light. By accepting our contradictions, we become whole. By integrating both aspects, we discover harmony.

Meditation under the guidance of a realised Master like Shree Shivkrupanand Swamiji helps us walk this journey with clarity. Meditation balances us within, clears the chakras, and opens the heart to empathy and love. It teaches us to embrace our humanity fully, to accept both joy and pain, and to live with compassion.

Ultimately, the journey to being human is about realising that we are both animal and divine, shadow and light. It is about embracing contradictions, transcending limitations, and living with awareness. When we walk this path consciously, we discover that being human is not a burden but a blessing - a chance to experience life in all its richness and to grow into love, empathy, and joy.
