Resisting Change is
Resisting Life
Human beings crave stability. We want
predictability, permanence, and control. Yet nature itself operates in cycles –
seasons shift, flowers bloom and fade, rivers flow, and life continually renews
itself through birth, decay, and rebirth. To resist change is like trying to
hold back the ocean or stop a river from flowing. True security isn’t found in
keeping things the same; it is found in learning how to swim with the current.
The Illusion of
Permanence - We often cling to the illusion that things will remain
as they are - relationships, identities, careers, even our own bodies. But
permanence is not the law of life; change is. When we resist change, we resist
the very rhythm of existence. Life is movement, and stagnation is a denial of
that movement.
The Generational
Contrast - Notice how differently we perceive change across
generations. Youth often welcome change with joy - new experiences, growth, and
the promise of the future. As we age, however, we begin to fear change,
lamenting endings and clinging to comfort. True spiritual maturity means
retaining that youthful openness to the unknown. It means refusing to let
comfort harden into stagnation.
Pain vs. Suffering - Change
itself rarely causes suffering. Pain is inevitable - loss, endings,
transitions. But suffering arises from resistance. When we cling to past
versions of ourselves, relationships, or situations, we create internal
friction. Pain is the natural signal of change; suffering is the refusal to
accept it. By softening into change, we allow pain to transform into wisdom
rather than prolonged struggle.
Life Happens in the
Transience - If things never changed, life would be a static
photograph instead of a movie. The beauty of life lies entirely in its fleeting
nature. A flower is precious because it blooms and fades. A season is cherished
because it transitions. To accept life means to accept the full package - beginnings
and endings, joy and sorrow, growth and decay.
Cultivating Flow - How
do we embrace change instead of resisting it? By cultivating flow. Notice where
you are gripping too tightly - perhaps a job, an expectation, or an identity.
Ask yourself: “What am I afraid to lose?” Then shift from control to trust.
Trust that the intelligence guiding the universe knows how to carry you through
transitions.
Meditation and
Surrender - Meditation under the guidance of a realised Master
like Shree Shivkrupanand Swamiji helps us cultivate unconditional surrender. In
meditation, resistance dissolves, and acceptance arises naturally. We begin to
see that change is not an enemy but a teacher, guiding us toward deeper
awareness and resilience.
Coming Home to Change
- Resisting change is resisting life itself. To embrace
change is to embrace the flow of existence. The past is gone, the future is
unknown, and the present is alive with movement. When we stop clinging and
start trusting, life becomes a dance rather than a battle. Change is not here
to destroy you; it is here to transform you.
