Where to Focus your Mind
The mind is extremely powerful, in fact
if you have no control over your mind, it will run riot and you will be left
very stressed out. We are all aware that the mind can absolutely dictate the
way our life functions – whether peacefully or with stress, anger and hatred.
Our subconscious is filled with impressions which we carry over from past
births and when the right moment comes the mind pulls it out of the subconscious
– and the funny thing is the mind invariably ‘remembers’ the bad impressions
which have been left behind in the subconscious mind; a small trigger and the
impression comes alive like a bad dream bringing along with it the anger,
hatred, fear – all the negative emotions come to the fore all over again.
How then do we get over such
impressions? We are all born with 50% good and 50% bad within us. It is entirely
dependent on us which direction we choose to take. In our initial years if we
have good values instilled in us by our parents, we have a tendency to develop
the good within us, as we grow independent, go to school, college, university –
it is our friends who are influential in the direction we take. If we get good
friends, we develop the good further, but if we get bad friends, then whatever
good instilled by our parents is overwritten by the bad influence of our
friends. Then the more time we spend on the path we are travelling on, the more
difficult it is to turn back and we tend to get pulled into a vortex of
darkness leading to very bad consequences in life. If this happens, the best
thing to do is to stop, take a break, introspect on whether you are comfortable
with the path your life has taken. If not, then change direction and turn back
and once you do that then the universe will conspire to pull you back from the
brink and lead you towards the light. You just have to show the good intention
of changing track!
We need to focus our mind on the good in
everything, we should learn to see the good everywhere, even in bad incidents
there is good happening – focus on that good and ignore the bad aspect – you will
see that your mind will slowly get trained to only see the positive aspects in
life. It is like Swamiji says, “Wherever I go I only see the positive, I only
look in the direction of the good. You look somewhere else, you look in the
direction where bad things are happening, so you only find bad in the world.”
Focus on the good and positive in day-to-day
life, and your mind will automatically start only looking at the good and
ignoring or not seeing the bad. When this happens, your life will change for
the better, you will be in a better mind space, your meditation will be
peaceful as your mind will be without negative thoughts. With practice, your
positive thoughts will slow down during meditation, you will become thoughtless
and then you will start finding that void through which you go into a deep
meditative state.
